In an apparent show of capitulation to the desicions of the Supreme Leader, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad finally attended a cabinet meeting today after over a week of absence from official duties.

Earlier, Iranian media reported that the president will chair a cabinet meeting today after a nine-day boycott of all official activities. IRNA cited a knowledgeable source to report the afternoon cabinet session will be convened and chaired by Ahmadinejad.

Ahamdienjad attended the meeting with his vice-president Mohammadreza Rahimi and other members of his cabinet. He is reportedly going to attend a press conference following the cabinet meeting.

The recent dispute between Ayatollah Khamenei and Mahmoud Ahamdienjad was triggered after Ayatollah Khamenei rejected Ahmadinejad's dismissal of intelligence minister Heydar Moslehi. Moslehi was reportedly put under pressure by Ahmadinejad to resign over certain disputes with the president's chief of staff, Esfanidiar Rahim Mashai.

Despite repeated rebukes from conservative members of parliament and the establishment, Ahmadinejad boycotted several official meetings and cancelled an official visit to the holy city of Qom. Ahmadinejad had reportedly expressed frustration with the leader’s interference in the president’s authority to appoint and dismiss his ministers.

Despite reports of a deep rift between Ahamdienjad and Ayatollah Khamenei, Fars news agency reported yesterdat that a delegation of conservative lawmakers met with Ahmadinejad and announced after their meeting that the president had expressed strong allegiance to the leader.

Tehran's prosecutor has refused to allow detained Iranian activist Haleh Sahabi to visit her father in hospital.

Haleh Sahabi's daughter told Jaras website: "Apparently the prosecutor met with my mother last Monday and informed her that her father is in ill health and that the family had applied for a temporary leave for her. But my mother has made certain complaints and all in all spoken in a way that did not please them and, therefore, she was denied leave."

Judiciary officials had said previously that only those political prisoners that express "remorse" over their actions will be allowed furloughs.

Ezatollah Sahabi, Haleh Sahabi's father, is a prominent Iranian political activist and leader of the National Religious Activists Council. He suffered a brain stroke yesterday and is currently in a coma.

Haleh Sahabi was arrested in 2009 during a demonstration in front of the parliament that was protesting the inauguration of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who was announced winner of the presidential race amidst allegations of vote fraud. She was charged with "propaganda against the regime by [her] repeated presence at illegal gatherings and disturbing public order." She was sentenced to two years in prison and a monetary fine. She began serving her sentence three months ago, after it was confirmed by the appellate court.

Ezatollah Sahabi, who was reportedly operated yesterday, was a member of the Revolutionary Council after the 1979 Revolution and part of the Iran's first post-Revolution government. He has also served as an MP in the Islamic Republic parliament. He has served time as a political prisoner both before and after the Revolution in Iran.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad came under attack yesterday from the Supreme Leader's deputy representative to the Revolutionary Guards. It is the latest sign of the dispute between the Iranian president and factions representing Ayatollah Khamenei.

Mojtaba Zolnour condemned Ahmadinejad's relationship with his chief of staff, Esfandiar Rahim Mashaie, saying it appears that Mashaei "is the actual president of Iran."

ISNA quotes Zolnour at a meeting in Mashhad saying: "Mr. Ahmadinejad is holding on to the worn out rope of Mr. Mashaie and is especially close to him."

Esfanidiar Rahim Mashaie, Ahmadinejad's chief of staff, has often been the target of criticism by conservative members of the establishment. Ahmadinejad's earlier attempts to make Mashaie his vice-president were overruled by the Supreme Leader. Conservative critics of the government have referred to Mashai as the "leader of a deviant movement in the government."

Despite growing criticism of Mashaie, Ahmadinejad has refused to remove him from his government.

Zolnour said the disputes over the appointment and dismissal of cabinet ministers over the past year have all been fomented by Mashai. "However, these issues are of minor consideration in view of [Ahmadinejad's] great service to the government, and the president is in line with the ideals of the regime," he said. "We hope that God rids Mr. President of this individual."

Most recently, Ahmadinejad accepted the resignation of his minister of intelligence, Heydar Moslehi, only to be overruled by the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei. Moslehi's resignation was reportedly instigated by his dispute with Mashai. The reinstatement of the minister of intelligence has not been taken well by Ahmadinejad, who has avoided cabinet meetings ever since.
