Yasser Khomeini, grandson of Ayatollah Khomeini, late founder of the Islamic Republic, condemned the house arrest of Iranian opposition leaders, Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, calling it "unacceptable."

The statements were noted in the website of Mohammd Taghi Karroubi, the son of Mehdi Karroubi.

According to this report, Yasser Khomeini visited Ali Karroubi, the youngest son of the opposition leader recently released from prison by Islamic Republic authorities. Ali Karroubi was arrested following the February 14 opposition protests which also precipitated the house arrest of the two opposition leaders.

The report adds that Yasser Khomeini expressed his sorrow for the situation imposed on the two families of Mousavi and Karroubi. The two opposition leaders have been under house arrest along with their wives for over a month after they called a rally in support of the recent uprisings in Arab countries.

Mohammad Taghi Karroubi cited the grandson of the late Islamic Republic leader saying he hoped the New Year would be a year in which "the rule of law based on prudence and reflection becomes the basis of dealing with people and political activists."

After weeks of complete news blackout, the opposition leaders and their wives were finally allowed a visit with their children last week. The visitors announced that both couples are in good health. The Islamic Republic has vowed to stop any form of public communication between the opposition leaders and the public.

Their house arrest has been condemned by several senior members of the clergy such as Assembly of Experts member, Ayatollah Dastgheib as well the former Iranian president, Mohammad Khatami.

The opposition maintains since the government has neither officially charged nor sentenced the opposition leaders for any crime, their house arrest is illegal and in violation of their citizen's rights.
