A report by a UN watchdog saying Iran is stepping up uranium enrichment measures leaves world powers no alternative but to push for new sanctions, France’s Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday. “In light of the report, the Six (five permanent members of the Security Council plus Germany) have no choice but to seek the rapid adoption of a new sanctions resolution,” ministry spokesman Bernard Valero told reporters at a regular news briefing.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in a report on Monday that Iran was preparing extra equipment to enrich uranium to higher levels and continues to stockpile nuclear material. The findings follow a deal brokered by Brazil and Turkey earlier this month under which Iran agreed to ship 1.2 tonnes of its low-enriched uranium stockpile abroad in return for fuel for a medical research reactor. The deal, which resurrected an earlier IAEA proposal brokered by France, Russia and the United States and rejected by Tehran, was designed to allay fears that Iran is developing nuclear weapons capabilities. Iran denies it is trying to build an atom bomb.
The new IAEA report showed Iran’s low-enriched uranium stockpile had grown to 2.4 tonnes, so that even if the 1.2 tonnes were shipped now it would still leave Iran with enough material for a nuclear weapon if enriched to higher levels. “The (IAEA) report demonstrates a complete lack of progress on the various subjects that are at the core of the international community’s concerns over Iran’s nuclear programme,” France’s Foreign Ministry said in a written statement on Tuesday. The ministry called for Iran to comply immediately with the resolutions of the UN Security Council and the IAEA board of governors and to cooperate with the international community to calm suspicions over its nuclear enrichment activities.

The arrival of Ahmadinejad's foreign minister Manouchehr Mottaki has led to protests in the European Parliament yesterday. As Mottaki, who is in Brussels to hold talks with MP’s, arrived at the European Parliament, he was met with MPs holding the pictures of, among others, Neda Agha Soltan, one of the victims of the post-election violence in Iran. They held their banners up high to make sure that Ahmadinejad’s representative would remember the faces of the victims for some time to come.
In addition, Green Movement protesters were gathering outside the European Parliament building at Place Du Luxembourg in Brussels. The protestors were outraged over the visit by the coup government's illegitimate foreign minister, and the granting of yet another platform for the Ahmadinejad apologist to try and paint a false picture of the realities in Iran and the Green Movement.

Opposition leaders Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi met each other yesterday. According to Mousavi's official Kaleme website, the two men discussed the different aspects of the forthcoming first anniversary of last June's rigged presidential election, as well as the 21st anniversary of the passing of Imam Khomeini on 3 June. During the meeting, Karroubi expressed his strong criticism towards the restrictions placed in the lead-up to the commemorations of the death of the Islamic Revolution's founder. "We are approaching the anniversary of Imam [Khomeini's] death and hope that similar to previous years, a great ceremony will be held."
According to Mir-Hossein Mousavi, "the situation in the country is such that these people [in the regime] have even imprisoned the image of the Imam. Imam [Khomeini] belongs to all of us and all the entire people. But now, what has been done is that a few people have presented Imam Khomeini's image in their own desired way in order to stay in power. This is like incarcerating Imam [Khomeini]. Jamaran (Khomeini’s place of residence during his final years) was a place full of memories; people went there with much love and renewed their oath of allegiance to Imam [Khomeini]. But now, a nationwide ceremony is held in the country and they [the authorities] cause all that creativity, enthusiasm and anticipation to disappear." Mousavi also called on the youth to convey the memories and the valuable legacy of Imam Khomeini to the new generation.
In the end, the two reformist figures signed a joint letter to the governor of Tehran province requesting authorisation to hold a rally on 12 June which marks the first anniversary of last year's massive election fraud. The letter states that the march will be held between Tehran's Imam Hussein Square and Azadi (Freedom) Square on 12 June.
