In a meeting with a group of Iranian nurses yesterday, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei lashed out against President Barack Obama's comment earlier in April that Iran and North Korea were not excluded from a possible US nuclear attack. Khamenei said that "Iran will bring its enemies to their knees." According to Fars news, a pro-government news agency closely linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guards, Khamenei added that "implicit threats of a nuclear attack will have no impact on the Iranian people. This threat, however, is a dark stain on the political history of the United States and a dark spot on the report card of this administration." Khamenei asked the international community not to ignore President Obama's threats and said, "With what right does the U.S. president threaten to nuke the Iranian people? This is a threat to world peace and security and no one should even dare to voice such threats." During the past couple of years, Khamenei has re-issued his past religious decree banning the production and use of nuclear weapons in an effort to show Iran's interest only in peaceful nuclear technology and not nuclear weapons. Since the new US nuclear strategy was announced in early April, Iranian authorities have reacted sharply by using fierce rhetoric to condemn President Obama's comments. Last week during the Military Day parade in Tehran, Ahmadinejad stood under a banner which quoted Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic, as saying, "America cannot do a damn thing!" He said: "Men much bigger than you couldn't do anything. You have your own special place now!" source: insideIran International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran reports that three family members and two of their close friends have been sentenced to death. The Campaign states that their "politicized" and "unfair trial" based on "weak evidence" "reveals a continuing program of punishing post-election protesters and intimidating the population." According to the human rights organization, Motahareh Bahrami, her husband Mohsen Daneshpour and their son Ahmad, along with their close friends Reyhaneh HajEbrahimi and Hadi Ghaemi are the five people who have been sentenced to death. The five cases are based on allegations that the defendants sent videos and pictures to the dissident group (operating in exile) ‘People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran’. Campaign spokesman Aaron Rhodes declared: "These sentences would be grossly disproportionate even if evidence linked the defendents to the charges, and they demonstrate complete disregard for justice and due process in perversely sending innocent citizens to the gallows. These sentences are aimed at intimidating the protest movement and are a mockery of justice." Mohammad Sharif, a prominent human rights lawyer, was able to launch an appeal for Motahareh Bahrami, Rayhaneh HajEbrahim and Hadi Ghaemi which is under review; however, the appeals for Ms. Bahrami's husband and son were sent to another branch and confirmed before any further action could have been taken by Sharif. In a similar case, Abdolreza Ghanbari, a 47-year-old teacher is accused of "sending emails to People's Mojahedin television network outside Iran" and has thus been charged with "Moharebeh" (enmity against God) and sentenced to death. The Campaign was told by several sources that they suspected intelligent agents themselves of making the alleged phone calls and sending emails in order to entrap the defendants. The human rights organization maintained: "Regardless of the origins of emails and phone calls presented as evidence against the defendants, the Campaign strongly condemns the use of such pedestrian communications as the basis of issuing death sentences." The International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran condemns "the issuance of disproportionate sentences on unfounded charges" and expresses deep concern regarding Iranian judiciary's "lack of accountability and transparency" and "overwhelming influence of the Intelligence Ministry and the Revolutionary Guards' intelligence units" in the courts’ decisions. source: Radio Zamaneh Mohammad Nourizad, an Iranian journalist and filmmaker who has been imprisoned for over four months for writing some critical letters to the Supreme Leader, has now written another letter to Ayatollah Khamenei from Evin Prison. Addressing him, Nourizad writes that the "people are lost” and asks: "Which people are you the leader of? I do not see many people around you. Leadership over a minority is no cause for pride." He states that his reason for writing another letter for the Leader is because despite everything, he still believes that "if there is going to be any change in the situation of the country, it can only take effect if the Supreme Leader initiates it." Nourizad warns that Iranian society is on the verge of a "vast explosion." He writes: "We and you have lost the people. The peace and quiet that you see in them has only been established through the force of arms." Mohammad Nourizad has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison by the preliminary court along with fifty lashes. source: Radio Zamaneh | |
